Quick and Easy Knit Dishcloth

A quick year-round project that makes a useful handmade gift.

Materials

• US 7 (4.5 mm) straight or circular knitting needles

• 40 yds (37 m) worsted-weight (#4) cotton yarn

• Stitch marker

• Tapestry needle

• Ruler

• Optional: blocking mats

Finished Measurements

7 x 7 in (18 x 18 cm)

Gauge

7 rows x 4 stitches = 1 x 1 in.

Abbreviations

• S1P: Slip 1 purlwise, slipping one stitch as if to purl from the left needle to the right needle.

• M1R: Pick up the bar between stitches from back to front, then knit into the front of the stitch.

• M1L: Pick up the bar between stitches from front to back, then knit into the back of the stitch.

• K2T: Knit the next two stitches together.

• S2KP: Slip two stitches as if to knit, knit one, then pass the two slipped stitches over the knit stitch.

Cast On

Cast on 3 stitches using the backward-loop cast-on.

Increases

Row 1: Knit 3.

Row 2: S1P, M1R, K1, M1L, K1.

Increase Repeat Row 1: S1P, K1, yarn over, knit until 2 stitches remain, yarn over, K2.

Increase Repeat Row 2: S1P, knit across.

Continue working Increase Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until one side measures 6.5 in (16.5 cm).

Decreases

Decrease Repeat Row 1: S1P, K2T, yarn over, knit until 3 stitches remain, yarn over, K2T, K1.

Decrease Repeat Row 2: S1P, K2, K2T, knit until 5 stitches remain, K2T, K3.

Continue working the decrease repeat until 9 stitches remain.

Ending Decreases

Ending Decrease Row 1: S1P, K2, S2KP, K3.

Ending Decrease Row 2: S1P, K2T, yarn over, K1, yarn over, K2T, K1.

Ending Decrease Row 3: S1P, K2T, K1, K2T, K1.

Ending Decrease Row 4: S1P, S2KP, K1.

Cast off the remaining 3 stitches and weave in all ends. Block the dishcloth to the finished measurements.
