Blythe Beret

In this step-by-step knitting tutorial, I show how to knit an adorable doll-sized beret. This hat is designed to fit dolls with 1:3 scale heads (including Blythe Dolls). Below I have linked the free PDF pattern as well as all of the supplies I used to create this project!

Size: One Size
• Fits Circumference: 10.5” (25.4 cm)
• Beret Diameter (when flat): 5.5” (14 cm)

Gauge: 8 sts x 10 rds = 1” x 1” stockinette in the round on US 2 (2.75 mm) knitting needles

Materials
• 70 yds (64 m) Fingering (#1) weight yarn
• Shown in Phila Fiber Co. Keepsake Yarn
• US 2 (2.75 mm) 40” Circular Knitting Needle Amazon
• 4 thin metal stitch markers Amazon
• Tapestry Needle Amazon
• Scissors

Abbreviations

  • M1L (Make 1 left): pick up the bar in between the stitch that was just worked and the one about to be worked with the left needle from front to back, then knit into the back of the stitch

  • M1R (Make 1 right): pick up the bar in between the stitch that was just worked and the one about to be worked with the left needle from back to front, then knit into the front of the stitch

  • SSK (Slip, slip, knit): slip 2 stitches individually from the left to right needle as if to knit, pass the two stitches back over to the left knitting needle, knit the two stitches together through the back loop

  • K2T (Knit two together): knit the next two stitches on the left knitting needle together

Step 1 Cast On

Using a stretchy cast-on method, cast on 72 stitches.

Step 2 Join in the Round & Ribbing

Join in the round and work the ribbing round a total of 4 times.

Ribbing Round: *Knit 1, Purl 1* repeat between *’s across the round

Step 3 Setup Round & Increases

Setup Round: *Knit 11, Purl 1, place a stitch marker* repeat between *’s across the round

Increase Round: *Knit 1, M1L, knit until 2 stitches remain before the marker, M1R, Knit 1, Purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between *’s six time across the round

In Pattern Round: *Knit until 1 stitch remains before the marker, purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

Continue alternating between the Increase Round and the In Pattern Round four additional times (8 more rounds) for a total of five repeats (10 rounds total).

Work just the In Pattern Round nine additional times.

Step 4 Decreases

Decrease Round: *Knit 1, SSK, Knit until 4 stitches remain before the marker, K2T, Knit 1, Purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

In Pattern Round: *Knit until 1 stitch remains before the marker, purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

Continue alternating between the Decrease Round and the In Pattern Round until you have 6 stitches remaining in between each set of stitch markers (36 stitches total).  

Step 5 Final Decreases & Bind Off

Final Decrease Round 1: *Knit 1, SSK, Knit 1, on the right knitting needle: slip the SSK stitch over the knit 1 stitch and off of the knitting needle, Knit 1, Purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

Final Decrease Round 2: *Knit 3, Purl 1, pass the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

Final Decrease Round 3: *SSK, knit 1, on the right knitting needle: slip the SSK stitch over the knit 1 stitch of and off of the knitting needle, Purl 1, remove the stitch marker* repeat between the *’s six times across the round

Step 6 Finishing

Cut yarn leaving a 10” (25.4 cm) tail and thread the tail onto the tapestry needle. Starting with the next stitch you would have worked, slide each stitch off the knitting needles and onto the yarn tail. Once all stitches are off the knitting needles, pull the yarn tail to close the top circle of stitches and thread the yarn tail to the inside of the hat. Secure the yarn tail and weave in the yarn tails.

To block, soak the hat in lukewarm water for 15 minutes. Gently squeeze the excess moisture out and roll the hat up in a dry towel. Lay flat to dry.
